Nacro Disclosure Service

Selecting the right people with the requisite skills to work with vulnerable people can be difficult. Disclosure Criminal record checks and the public protection arrangements that accompany them makes this process even more complex. The Nacro Disclosure Service can help you make sense of these systems and so support you in making safe and fair recruitment decisions.

We are an authority on Disclosures and the accompanying legislation. Our knowledge and expertise comes from over 30 years of giving advice about the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act, criminal record checks and disclosing convictions. Nacro’s expertise has been used as a basis for guidance issued across the statutory, voluntary and private sectors.

Nacro has a close involvement in the work of the Criminal Records Bureau. We contributed to the consultations that preceded the 1997 Police Act, which established the Bureau. We worked with the Bureau in the early days to develop guidance on Recruiting Safely, and have monitored the development of the Disclosure service ever since. This culminated in a major Nacro conference in January 2006, ‘Getting Disclosures Right’.

Ex-offenders make up around a quarter of the workforce. We believe that most of them do not pose a risk and can be safely employed. However, we are completely committed to safe employment and ensuring that the minority who may pose a risk are identified and prevented from causing harm. We are keen to support employers and others who share this view.
